Pros

Technology driven company with exciting projects. Very stable and easily makes revenue targets because of lack of competition. Has a very good reputation amongst the Science and Engineering world because almost all students use MATLAB as undergrads.

Cons

The only way you can survive at this company is by becoming a cog in the wheel. There is only one way to do things and that is The MathWorks way. Creativity and new ideas are discouraged, unless they come from employees that have been there forever. There is no such thing as ideas adopted from the outside. Quality of first and second line managers is extremely low. Most have never seen any proper training as managers. Extremely paternalistic senior management. One of the worse places to work is Technical Marketing. There is no leadership from the marketing organization. Product direction is totally dictated by development. Technical Marketing is side stepped by sales, AEs and customers. Best way to describe their role is as "checklist marketing" ; just execute what is on the checklist. It doesn't matter if the material is used by anyone. In general it is not. If Technical Marketing disappeared tomorrow, no one would notice.

Pros

Excellent balance between family like and work. Great opportunities to experiment before you choose which department you want to move into.

Cons

The pay is low. They dont hire green card immediately until they are absolutely sure you are a good fit for the department you eventually transfer into. They want to make sure you dont leave.

Pros

The work environment is great at MathWorks for engineering. I've read other reviews that say you have to "drink the kool-aid" in order to succeed. To them I would say, "oh lighten up". If you are a good engineer and you are excited to solve cool problems and can work well with other people, then MathWorks is a great place to work. If you are a cynical uber-nerd with a chip on your shoulder and you constantly roll your eyes every time you hear the phrase "core values", then no, MathWorks is not a good fit for you (nor will any other company be, you will find). The salary is not the best, but it's probably in the top half of comparable companies. The perks are great. The owner (it's a private company) is super generous. Plus it's MATLAB! It's cool to be a part of that.

Cons

Your mileage will vary based on who your manager is. I'm in a great group, but I know there are other managers who are not as good (I worked for a couple).
