Was once an incredible company

Pros

There are many wonderful people. The company has a strong reputation for high-quality work (albeit expensive). Incredible opportunities for learning. Nice benefits.

Cons

The company's leadership is extremely profit-driven while attempting to sell a mission they don't live up to. Those who bring in massive projects are doted on. For the rest, the executive team has shown time and time again that they do not care about the work environment or career growth for the vast majority of staff. HR has led employee surveys for years. Employees report unhappiness, and the executives ignore and repeat the surveys, bringing in outside consultants to suggest changes that don't happen. It is infuriating to work at a data company that ignores data on its own employees. There's a new policy that a recent hire noticed. The change was not announced to staff. The policy states that if you have less than 50% coverage, you can be asked to go part-time. Many senior people are leaving. Some have called it an exodus. At the same time, a staff member was just fired for sharing bonus details for the executives. While staff are being forced into part-time status, the CEO received a bonus of >$600k for 2023. Most folks who left believe the executives with 30 years at the company are planning for retirement and driving up stock prices for the ESOP without consideration for the staff, quality of billing, and needs of clients. Their mission, vision, and core values statement aren't worth the stuff they print them on. Best advice I can give? Contact the trove of people who recently left to understand their concerns. These concerns have only deepened over the years. If you are comfortable with them, then proceed. Otherwise, know that this was a great company whose CEO and ineffective board stayed too long.

A slow moving car crash

Pros

People that are passionate about using their skills for public good.

Cons

- Truly awful leadership. They spent a ton of time last fall changing the org chart and not preparing for the catastrophe of the trump administration. Now they're scrambling to do whatever it takes to get scraps of contracts. - Employees are not treated with dignity when it comes to the RIFs. The severance packages they offer are pitiful. They are targeting individuals that speak out and are trying to push back against the company's heavy handed approach to top down decision making. - There is a complete lack of transparency regarding the layoff process. Despite being asked repeatedly to provide a set of clear criteria for layoffs, the leadership of the company continues to exercise shadowy decision-making that prioritizes petty grievances with respect to RIFs. - A majority of shareholders voted against electing the CEO to the board. Despite this clear loss of trust, the board doubled down on their loyalty to the CEO. - The company repeatedly protects individuals that have several HR complaints against them. Individuals with a pattern of bullying behavior and toxicity appear to face no repercussions. - They don't even do exit interviews! Because they don't care about actually getting real feedback from employees that leave. - The White Men (TM) at this company keep failing upwards at the expense of all other groups. They paid lip service to diversity and abandoned their principles the second it was politically expedient to do so.

Pros

Thoughtful and talented colleagues; opportunities to grow and build skills in different areas; impactful and quality work; allows for flexible schedule

Cons

The billability model is suffocating and limits opportunities, especially for junior staff, regarding professional development and networking (e.g., attend conferences and trainings, write articles and blog posts, etc). Instead, you have to make the "business case" for why you should access those opportunities. It also makes for a culture that is very reactive, instead of proactive, in its efforts to grow their bench of leaders. As other reviewers share, the promotion pathway is unclear and super slow. You either need to be at the company 6+ years to get promoted or get opportunities that force you to perform 'above and beyond' (which often leads to burnout - and no, I'm not putting my physical and well-being on the line to go above and beyond my current responsibilities). Mathematica also suffers from a culture of urgency and fast-paced work. Our project timelines can be unrealistically fast (this goes into how we budget for and plan for work at the proposal stage), and this is not sustainable. I've had great opportunities in this company but its policies and procedures do not serve employees across the board equitably.
