Pros

Cashier performance was logged and posted so we could see how well we were doing compared to our teammates. Team leaders did their best to work with your schedule, but limited staffing was often an issue.

Cons

Minimum wage is the starting salary, and because it is a union, you don't get raises based upon performance, only seniority (work so many hours, you get a $.10 raise). Same with promotions. Also, at the store where I worked, they had just implemented a new system for clocking in and out for cashiers. We had to clock in at the register and clock out at the register, instead of at the time clock in the break room (which was at the opposite end of the store). You would clock out at 7:30 for your half hour break, and RUN to the back of the store while trying to avoid customers that would inevitably need your help. You can't say no, otherwise they can complain about you and you can be written up for it. You take your time to call someone that is on the clock and can help them, then you finally make it to the break room. Now you have 20 minutes left to use the restroom/eat dinner/make phone calls/rest/etc. But you have to leave the break room 5 minutes early because a customer WILL flag you down on the way back to the register. It never fails. All in all, the actual break is 10 minutes shorter than it should be because of the running back and forth. The people that aren't very good at their jobs are weeded out eventually. It is difficult to fire someone that holds a position within a union, but that's why Meijer has such strict performance guidelines. If you are one minute late to work, automatic write up. If you are late more than three times, either coming back from break or from coming in for your shift, you can get fired. This is how they scare you into keeping your head down and doing your job for very little pay.
