Pros

TIRR is seriously one of the best facilities I've ever worked in (and I've worked in multiple settings, both full time and as contract). The culture here has constantly pushed me to grow as a clinician and as a person. Being "good" at what we do isn't enough - we strive to constantly be better and better in order to provide the patients with the best possible chance of recovery. The patients and their families inspire me daily and my co-workers are some of the most dedicated, compassionate therapists I've ever seen.

Cons

It is a high-stress facility. That just comes from working with the catastrophic injuries that we see on a daily basis. It's impossible NOT to get close to the patients and families that we see for at least an hour and a half every day, for sometimes several weeks. That being said, I do feel like our management and leadership staff do a good job of preparing us and giving us the resources we need to do our job as well as throw in some fun stuff here and there just to "de-stress." As for benefits, health insurance gets worse each year with less coverage, higher premiums and higher deductibles.

Pros

Large healthcare system with ample opportunity to advance, if provided the right environment

Cons

Leadership, at the level below the executive suite, at the Texas Medical Center campus tend burn out very quickly and the turnover is extremely high. Good, competent leaders are groomed but given too much work to be successful over a long term period, and burnout occurs. Turnover in many of the management positions is close to 70-80% over a 18-24 month period. It's generally accepted that you'll be paid competitively but will need to sacrifice work/life balance in order to remain at the organization. There's a mix of very good and very bad executives at the campus, with the highest turnover associated in areas managed by the Chief Financial Officer and the Chief Human Resources Officer. The HR Department has turned over its staff several times, over the course of the last 7-10 years, as a result of the Chief HR Officer. Retention in the leadership roles within HR is extremely poor, with many choosing to leave voluntarily due to the poisonous environment. The organization is financially very healthy but runs very lean, with respect to both capital and human resources.

Pros

Decent salary, okay benefits and working for largest company in Houston. Great healthcare provider and leader in the market.

Cons

Limited upside career wise, lots of dinosaurs still roaming around, not for the aggressive money making types. Management could be better.
