Unique in Healthcare

Pros

This is one of the few remaining truly mission-driven healthcare institutions in the US. Even our CFO puts mission before finances. Senior leadership has offered us opportunities to do more innovative things than anyone might imagine to be reasonable. This is a great institution with a great future in the war against cancer.

Cons

Like any large, older institution, MSK has some bureaucracy that can be frustrating at times. It is also true that not all executives are equally effective. That said, anyone who seeks the betterment of the mission will find their place here.

Seniority counts for too much, new grads not treated well

Pros

Great outside reputation, great health insurance and paid time off benefits (4 weeks vacation plus holidays), no card access for clocking in and out (sign-in only), free jitneys available for transportation between some locations

Cons

Management will side with employees with the most senority and will often add workload and blame to younger staff. Lots of unrest with younger staff who want to make a difference in patient care - these suggestions often go ignored or backfire.

Core facilities are excellent, modern well maintained facilities,

3 year limit on housing for post-docs, mostly focused on cancer (not necessarily a con), some older tenured faculty are no longer productive, research animal resource center (manages animal facility) is unnecessarily bureaucratic
