Pros

Scientists were in charge. Great work/life balance. Highly Ethical environment. Very good Scieince performed everyday.

Cons

Salary is below average. Promotions are few and far between. Merck is screwing everything up. they have very little regard for scientists or the scientific process. Merck uses antiquated techniques and has no problem throwing money out the window for shiny new toys.

Pros

If you are career oriented, you can make a lot of money at this company. The opportunties are endless to those who have put in their sweat equity.

Cons

If you are a family oriented person, beware! Most people live on their blackberries 24/7 and may expect you to do the same. If you chose not to follow the other sheep, you will be left in the dust or unemployed.

Pros

The objective to develop online communities especially within a pharmaceutical company is very innovative and has the potential to transform the way that scientists and workers within Merck develop new ideas and products. Being a part of this initiative could be very exciting. The consultants working in this department for the most part are very bright and experienced people.

Cons

There are so many consultants working on this initiative we're literally tripping over each other. It takes weeks to get a laptop and for some literally 3 months to get assigned a desk and a phone. The level of disorganization and chaos is unparalleled. There is no leader who shares what the big picture is or even lays out what the big and small objectives are. You're on your own baby... And then when you try to reach out and try to connect with the other people within and outside of the department then you're shot down and warned not to communicate with anyone either within or outside the team. Management is very insecure and controlling. Oh yeah, there are at least a half dozen other departments within Merck doing the same thing, some also called CoE.
