Don't believe everything they say

Pros

Before Physical Optics Corporation was acquired by Mercury Systems: Good benefits, work/life balance, good people.

Cons

After Mercury acquired POC: Still good people in Torrance, but worse benefits, they wouldn't tell us the details until the last minute, even after people continually asked. They wouldn't take the lessons learned from POC and implement them. Mercury claimed multiple times they wouldn't lay anyone off, "We don't want to break you," they said. Then a month after the acquisition was final, mass layoff...The press reports talked about all the good things, how revenue is expected to be so good, and conveniently left out the part about layoffs, which according to one report, would save a few million dollars when expected revenue was one billion dollars... I can't help but wonder if everyone still with Mercury is fearful of another layoff, since this one was so unexpected with all the reports of supposed good financial health, etc.

Pros

Good culture, awesome COVID response and resources for employees

Cons

Mercury continues to be in a growth stage, new organizational structure, unexpected RIFs firing high level and high quality employees with more than 15 years with the company give unsettling vibes and moral. Becoming more manager stovepipe heavy as growth continues. Little opportunities for upward movement unless pursuing management roles. Promotions were frozen, silly below industry raises, and 50% of expected and deserved bonus. A real slap in the face after many 60-hour weeks.

Pros

Mercury is the best company I've ever worked for both in terms of culture and innovation. It feels so good to come to work every day and feel fulfilled by the opportunities to employ my expertise but also the business and what we do as a company. Management from the C-suite down really cares (most of them anyway) and wants what's best for the employees. It's like a family here but a family of overachievers. At Mercury, they push us hard to get results and many times you'll end up putting in well over your 40 hours each week, but it's balanced out by generous PTO and flexible work hours. This company is driving hard toward growth and success, it's just a question of whether you're in or out. I've worked at a lot of places and all the others either expect 100% from you and give nothing but disrespect in return or are so beaurocratic and afraid of stepping on others feelings, that nothing gets done. Mercury is the perfect balance of hard charging and human. I personally love this organization and I hope I have a LONG career here.

Cons

- HR, especially at the leadership level: There are a few individual contributors who are great, but for the most part it's a waste of time to talk to anyone on the team and expect anything positive to come from it. They are dismissive and don't listen to a word anyone says - whether it's feedback or a request for assistance with something - they turn it around on you. They think they have all the answers. They refuse to acknowledge their issues or that they even have any and it's really frustrating to see senior management let them get away with it and in fact protect/insulate them from any accountability. They are supposed to drive our culture and values through the organization, but they don't even abide by them. - Growth: it's been amazing to be a part of our growth but it's been tough too, to go through the transtitions so quickly. It's hard to keep up the pace sometimes.

Thank you! Your comments under pros really capture our culture. It is like a family here, and I love your term, “family of overachievers”. At Mercury, our employees invest in each other both personally and professionally across the business. I wish you continued success and contentment for a long time to come. Regarding your concerns, I appreciate your honest and thorough feedback and I am interested in speaking with you further. I would like some detailed examples of your experiences that made you feel this way so that we can investigate and work to correct them. I also understand that it can be challenging to adapt to steady changes but I will commit to championing your needs and anything that will enable you and your fellow employees to weather transitions more comfortably. Please reach out to me and share your needs so that I can help. Sincerely, Tarrah Ledoux Manager, Marketing Communications
