Pros

The pay is great. You might only make in 40's your first year, especially if you have no Coast Guard credentials, but once you do you can make some a decent paycheck. There's a lot of port calls. I frequented the Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, and Pacific.

Cons

I'd really only recommend MSC to someone really young, or the retired. But be prepared to give up 9 months out of the year to the sea. Also, unlike real shipping companies, it can be pretty hard to get a relief. If you're doing something specialized, I was a Search and Rescue Swimmer on top of AB, it can be even more difficult. But at least anything that inconveniences you leads to monitory compensation, including not getting a relief, not having your own room on the ship, air conditioning broken...

Pros

- great pay - ability to upgrade license quickly - ability to see the world - great time in port - opportunities to take knowledge to new careers

Cons

- one month of vacation for every four months worked - management ashore (human resources, etc) have no sailing background (ie, out of touch) - inability for shipboard management to get rid of incompetent crew

Pros

The pay is good for RET's, at least on the west coast. Even an RET2 on a decent ship will make over 70k per year, and an RETC will make close to or slightly past 100k provided the OT is decent (55 plus every 2 weeks). The job stability is outstanding provided that you maintain your clearance and all the other stuff that goes without saying.

Cons

The RET community is in bad shape. The management in Norfolk has lost control of the program, people are getting relieved (with regularity) 60-plus days late. It can't be all blamed on the placement specialist, but someone somewhere is at fault. RET's are doing what they want, getting extended vacation any way they can, and the head office is afraid to do anything about it. Maybe they just don't care.
