Wide variety of projects to work on. Opportunities to travel a lot. Flexible work schedule. Great people to work with.

Cons

Consolidation of the command into the Norfolk office has caused a rift between DC and Norfolk office.

getting to travel decent pay depends on ship great training

grumpy old men still think they are in the military some chief mates are stingy with overtime not enough time given to see family

Pros

- great pay - ability to upgrade license quickly - ability to see the world - great time in port - opportunities to take knowledge to new careers

Cons

- one month of vacation for every four months worked - management ashore (human resources, etc) have no sailing background (ie, out of touch) - inability for shipboard management to get rid of incompetent crew
