Pros

Government benefits: Healthcare, TSP (401k) matching, pension plan (FERS) It is not a company so it is not effected by market forces (example: 2014-2022 downturn in oil market which disrupted work in the Gulf of Mexico).

Cons

In 2016 the rotation for mariners with MSC was 120 days on the ship and 60 days off the ship on leave. Now they policy is being enforced as 120 days on the ship and 30 days off. This is well below industry standard. Since MSC is chronically undermanned that 120 days on the ship can easily become 150, 180, or 240 days, due to being overdue.
