Pros

Amazing network both inside and outside the firm Brilliant people from diverse intellectual backgrounds Great exit opportunities, well respected in many fields Supportive of flexible working arrangements (remote, part-time degree etc)

Cons

Centers can be natural silos of excellence (though in my experience if you reach out across centers people respond positively, it's just not the norm and there could be more of it) Upward mobility can be a challenge, especially for those early in their careers. Somewhat a function of size, there isn't the same capacity to continually promote from within. Not a clear path from Associate to Director like you'd have in a consulting firm (though I think management is working to address this)

Growing Pains

Pros

The Milken Institute is trying to grow but encountering a lot of issues in the process. With new management things may have a chance of making positive change. On the positive side, you're near the beach and they recently moved to 3 weeks paid vacation. Also, you have an opportunity to work on projects that have real impact if you are a part of the research team. The Milken Institute Global Conference is one of a kind and you won't find that type of experience anywhere else.

Cons

The average employee tends to last 1-2 years at the Milken Institute before moving on to new opportunities. I was employed at the Milken Institute for more than 5 years and witnessed high turnover. The Milken Institute is trying to grow but encountering a lot of issues in the process. The organization has a strict no remote work policy (no working from home).

Thank you for your feedback and I apologize for my delayed response. I joined Milken Institute as the new HR Director in late August 2017. I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions on how to improve the organization and hope that my arrival ultimately will address some of the concerns you expressed. As we integrate opportunities for greater employee engagement, additional training and more transparency, our hope is that our employees will continue to benefit from their employment at Milken Institute. If you have additional suggestions or would like to share more about your experiences at the Milken Institute, please feel free to email me at mjosaphat@milkeninstitute.org Thank you, Marjorie Josaphat Human Resources Director Milken Institute

Pros

They offer health insurance. That's it.

Cons

Where to start? Milken Institute is currently restructuring and has brought in some of the most horrible people imaginable. My boss has a boss who spends most of their time gossiping and talking poorly about everyone at the Institute. If they don't like you, they will make up false reports and lies about you. Basically they will harass you until you quite or get let go. There is no communication either within teams or between teams. The entire organization is a mess. Everyone hates it there which is why people are quitting on a weekly basis. Most people spend their days job hunting because they're so desperate to get out of there. The people there are mostly fake nice and barely tolerable. Even worse now with the new management team. Unless you're desperate for a paycheck, avoid this place like the plague. You'll seriously want to kill yourself if you work here longer than a month.
