Pros

1) Flexible hours for salary employees 2) Allows employees to work independently 3) Good 401K match / fully vested time 4) Values employees' development goals

Cons

1) Allows employees to stagnate 2) Slow to reward employees for good performance (via compensation increases and promotions) 4) Well below average salaries for the area 3) Encourages employees to assume additional roles/responsibilities without increased compensation 4) Currently allowing pay compression and doesn't seem to be working towards resolving it 5) Frequently stressful workload 6) Poor communication from upper management 7) Non-standardized yearly goals between groups in the same department. (i.e. an exceeds expectation rating in one group could be a failing rating in another when looking at the same metric)

Pros

When you talk to people, and I mean really talk to them, they open right up and are totally willing to work together towards something great. I really enjoy working with my peers here. It seems like everyone is really interested in a great workplace for everyone. The pay is also terrific compared to other companies in our field. The benefits are awesome. I don't really worry at all about job security as long as I do my job.

Cons

Since the merger, it feels like a lot of the management of the company isn't doing their due diligence in trying to actually organize what they are trying to accomplish. Theres a definitive rift when you look at how the legacy Merck operations work compared to legacy Sigma Aldrich operations. The Merck side seems to understand process and hierarchy, but the Red side seems like a massive ball of confusion. Each manager seems to work in a silo with their only focus on what they are trying to do; even if it really does benefit the company. Simply put, too many cooks in the kitchen. In addition, if you have a somewhat specialized role, it just feels like the company has no idea what to do with you. Nor do they seem interested in listening to how your expertise can help change the company for the better. I would tell them to stop trying to make everyone operate the same way. They need to welcome different ways of thinking.
