Poor accountability in leadership breads fearful and toxic culture

Pros

Brilliant product. The best in class for visual collaboration and the product team continues to release innovative updates for it. Most people are excellent. You will work with some of the smartest and most compassionate individuals around, and there is a desire amongst most of the team to collaborate. You'll have amazing opportunities to put your skills to use, regardless of job function, and chances to help the company build and iterate.

Cons

The majority of the leadership team appears to have zero clue how to run their teams, or how to get the most out of their employees. Exec Team are MIA most of the time, no introspection from C-Level members on why certain aspects of the company are going downhill or why objectives aren't being met. Middle managers show no accountability and flip issues around back onto employees instead of trying to better working conditions. Transparency has been diminishing over time, to the point of cliquey groups being formed, and preferential treatment being given to some employees. Most people are fearful of additional layoffs (the first round of layoffs were treated extremely poorly) and are now looking for new jobs. No attempts to stem the flow of diverse hires leaving the business because of an increasingly toxic culture toward minority communities. Internal promotion is a joke.

The definition of overpromise and under deliver

Pros

- I was a fan of the product before joining, and was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to find new use cases for things beyond project planning, like weekly team meetings, visualizing data and reporting and in general adding a bit of personality to otherwise dull spreadsheets - Pretty decent benefits and competitive salaries in the Netherlands - Compassionate and kind team members across the business

Cons

- Much of the leadership team has only worked at Miro, or very few jobs in addition to their Miro experience. This can be an asset when it comes to understanding the product and historical context, but also shows in how decisions are made, as title and power are often leveraged instead of strategy (which is somewhat ironic given that the company places so much emphasis on having as much of a flat hierarchy as possible) - The decision to do layoffs seemed like an afterthought, or merely copying the tech industry writ large instead of some sort of requirement to keep business moving - There is much work to be done to make Miro a safe environment for underrepresented and marginalized employees. Leadership team is not bought in, and even though a number of customers want to see the needle moved on DEI-related matters, Miro instead only offers lip service and emphasizes "neutrality" instead of actually acknowledging structural issues that trickle down from the tippy top. This is further highlighted by the number of underrepresented leaders who have left the company of their own accord, many before the layoffs even happened
