Pros

Good benefits, medical clinic onsite, cheap health insurance. The pension is great. Generous vacation and two weeks winter holiday. There are other good things about the organization.

Cons

The salary is so low for the amount of work required. It is difficult to get a promotion or a raise. Things move slowly.

Pros

I served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and then a Lecturer in the Department of Communication Studies for 5 years. I will cherish those years for a long time, as the relationships and teaching experiences were formative for me.

Cons

The downsides are common to all academia: Lower pay, pressure to get a terminal degree, to research, and irregular schedule with various breaks. But all of these things were eclipsed, at least for me, by the relationships, the opportunities, and the love of MSU, which was also my alma mater.
