Pros

Our university is in a growth pattern so there are lots of possibilities. There are some amazing people here really trying to make a difference in a challenging environment. There are and will be opportunities to do great work in pockets. Work/Life balance is really good for the most part. Changes are happening and they can be good as long as people are patient. Since the staff levels are low, there is opportunity to have your hands in many things. If you are interested in a challenge and you have enough optimism to think you can make a difference, then this is the place for you.

Cons

There is not enough staff to support the growth in student population. As a union place, there are lots of mediocre work done here. It's used as a crutch to rationalize a poor work ethic. Not everyone acts this way but it's pretty rampant. The pay is not the best so you have to really value the mission. We do not get 100% of our funding from the state government, yet they get to dictate 100% of the rules. It is very command and control, micro-managed culture. There is very little empowerment. If you happen to get a supervisor who doesn't succumb to this, then you can have a great experience.

Pros

The cool thing about "student assistance" employment is that it is not work-study and is thus available to anyone. Very flexible schedules if you're a student. Great people to work with. Resume-builder. Due to renovations at the time, I was still paid for the hours I would have normally worked. Independent work with some supervision.

Cons

It's all office work. Not really for people who constantly need to move around. For University Advancement Report Writers: it requires the ability to write and proofread/edit (as the title suggests). It's temporary (for the semester only) unless you're work-study or just that great at the job.
