L.A. is the firm's red-headed stepchild

Pros

Generous pay and benefits, top-notch support staff, beautiful offices, excellent lawyering.

Cons

Such dysfunctional local leadership in L.A.'s labor & employment group. Bizarre behavior by partners tolerated at a very high level of management. If you do not mesh with the quirks of these partners, you are gone within months. High turnover among lawyers. For the most part, the ones who stayed on have terrible personalities, but there are certain exceptions. Also, the Death Star in Philly will only RARELY mint a new partner in L.A., so don't go in there thinking you will eventually make partner, because strong odds are that you will not. In fact, you'd be lucky to get out of there in anything other than a pine box.

Huge firm, ambitious initiatives, tough skin you get from working at place like this

Cons

Plenty - Attorneys are worked to the bone, absolutely no work/life balance. Expectations are set extremely high for admin professional but really nothing to back it up. Salary increases are meager even if you perform, bonuses are virtually non-existent. You become pigeon-holed into a position if you're good at what you do. As a result, morale among teams are at an all time low. Chances for moving up the ladder are possible if you know the right people and don't have an opinion. Plenty of turn-over. The firm is expanding too quickly and professionals are overwhelmed with work load.

Great lawyers, great clients, great work. Nice office in a good location with a gym and a first-rate subsidized cafeteria.

Cons

There can be pressure. You will be expected to work hard for the benefit of the firm and the clients, with a low margin for error.
