Pros

-If you make it high enough up the ladder you get the money that the junior staff earn for you. (You know this as senior staff brag about wealth while you are eating sandwiches from home for the 5th day in a row, 5 years in) -You can say to people you have worked on famous projects ( though no compensation for loosing weekends and evenings for less than a trainee london bus driver at times)

Cons

-Toxic Culture of bullying- I have literally seen my team lead have a mental break down in the office on a Tuesday. Rest assured the vultures were there to dig their claws in after he left in an ambulance that day. -Having to work excessive hours for no reward or recognition -No consistency in line management so you cant progress ( "i dont know what the last guy promised, but i didnt"- even though its written down in your PDR) -Having to travel 2 hours each way per day on your own time -Training always too late- despite saying you dont have training in something which you need to do, favourite employees get the projects and training opportunities -lies about pay- get qualified and go up a grade/ get more- was delayed by a year. Also, achieve agreed goals in your PDR- cant give you pay rise as agreed as we dont want to. -Mangers will happily stand in your way in terms of qualifications and progression if it suits their agenda. -Abusing of public funds. Government projects were intentionally over enginnered to keep the staff working and fees coming in, rather than delivering value to the tax payer and an optimum solution quickly. This will be in your implied job desciption. - Have been sat in a car with a senior colleague as he told his girlfriend what he was going to do with her that night (im aware of glassdoor community guidelines so wont detail). complain and you are out. -A colleague who was too touchy, and a bully ( but thats just him- find a way to work with him) -one project, where the team leads goal for me was to attend more meetings and get more face time, not one meeting in a whole year. -You can spend 6 years here, get some qualifications and you will be an Assistant to an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, and having to commute 2 hours each way of your own time, and be expected to say thank you. - they wont rewrite job descriptions, even if you move roles/ departments- handy as it means you can be doing low level tasks if it suits them
