Pros

Discount was 40%, which was necessary if you had to feed a pet on wages from working there.

Cons

Management doesnt care about you. Gives you very little PTO you are expected to deplete for any reason you are 10 minutes late or sick, even if if does not cover the time you missed, and will write you up a "strike." They do not care if managent or coworkers are racist, transphobic, or otherwise harass you on or off the clock. You are expected to do hard restocking labor, emotion labor, and potentionally be assualted by customers and their dogs alike. They do not properly train employees on animal safety, let anyone bring any kind of untrained dog in, and I have seen too many coworkers maimed. All for $800 a check. Lars has an inflated unchecked ego and has argued with, demeaned, and gaslit employees over the employee forums. You might have an easier time working for any other corportate pet store.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We’re sorry to hear you weren’t happy with your time with us. Mud Bay takes accusations of discrimination and harassment very seriously and the safety of our Muddies is of utmost importance. Please reach out to the HR team at HR@MudBay.com with the specifics of your experience and we will take appropriate action. We understand that working in the pet retail industry comes with some of the less-fun tasks, such as stocking food bags and cans that can get heavy! Our goal is to balance that effort with fun, comradery, support, education, and of course, hanging out with dogs and cats. The training we offer for the First Year Journey with Mud Bay, personal safety and safe animal handling, and the health and happiness of the people and pets we serve is something we are proud of. We’re always looking for ways to make our training even better. If you haven’t already filled out the surveys at the end of each training course, you are welcome to send the team an email to let us know if there’s anything you would suggest we include to make the courses more helpful for current and future Muddies.

Pros

Very easy work, you get to meet and spoil pets.

Cons

Opponents of the Black lives matter movement. Class discrimination in the form of not accepting cash in some locations. We were told we couldn't takes bills larger than 20, then a white man came into the store and when he couldn't pay in cash he flipped out and they reversed their decision. District managers tried to convince me that given enough time I would hate my job and coworkers. Lars and Marissa, the owners of the company were born with silver spoons and are incredibly out of touch with reality. The are vehemently anti union. They recently brought in HR hires from other mega corporations such as Wal-Mart that are destroying the culture. Managers come and go more frequently than staff. Upper management is unsupportive and make false promises. The recently did an employee census cause they wanted to gloat about how many POCs and Queer people they have on payroll.

Thank you for taking the time to provide a review. We are proud to use the MIT living wage calculator in our pay structure, which is updated annually and calculates the cost of living for individuals by county. We take accusations of discrimination very seriously and would like the opportunity to further investigate. Please reach out to HR@mudbay.com to provide more detail on this situation.

Pros

Dogs and discounts, lots good employees, but it's tough that the ones who care leave.

Cons

It's so inconsistent about standards. Things that are "no big deal" for a one-time error, like showing up to the wrong store after call-outs and constant reshuffles of schedules, suddenly show up in warnings, while people who are consistently late or don't show continue to get by with no accountability. Favoritism impacts who is promoted, and who is believed. I should never have had to also be a therapist as a store lead for a paltry $15-$17 an hour, but somehow that's part of "development" is dealing with people's unresolved traumas. Somehow "development" is helping people solve burnout. I kept being passed up for promotions for very nitpicky reasons, when others who were favorites were promoted in months only to be fired for unethical practices and harm to employees. I felt lied to about work/life balance when I was asked to have a full 7 day availability or else I couldn't stay on, when others in my position were given lots of flexibility and leeway due to preferences when my unavailability on one *half day* a week was being seen with greater scrutiny.

Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback. Mud Bay is proud to partner with the Lifeworks Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Our EAP provides up to 5 free counseling sessions to each of our Muddies that addresses each of their concerns. Scheduling questions are often quickly resolved by our District Managers. The HR Team will be happy to assist or facilitate a conversation. We can be reached at hr@mudbay.com.
