Pros

Work life balance and opportunities for growth. You may have to leave your branch to get the growth, but there are 27 institutes of possibilities with in the NIH.

Cons

Stalled promotions. There is a lot obvious favoritism and politics going on. So, the way I moved through was by going the extra mile and other departments recruited me or I applied to other departments to get my promotion.

Pros

Government Benefits and then some. In the DC area onsite parking is rare for all employees and NIH has an abundance of parking. HHS has extra benefits for time-off that are better than other federal agencies. Low turnover and higher morale than lower performing government agencies.

Cons

As a non-scientist in a business analyst position promotion potential is limited. Pay grades ar slower than other federal agencies and promotions are more challenging. Stubborn older employees are a significant majority of the federal staff. This equates to entitlement, laziness, and lack of accountability.
