Pros

None really. I would have said job security but job security has not been a problem for past two decades for IT professionals.

Cons

Everyone at NIH thinks they are IT specialist. This combined with extreme discrimination ensures least qualified white people are promoted to management position within months of they are joining the organization. If they say Microsoft, they are considered IT experts while more qualified and capable minorities are told to go through leadership trainings, told to continue apply for jobs only to be turned down over and over again.

Pros

The members of my lab, including my supervisors are kind and respectful. I have a lot of flexibility in my work schedule, but I know this is not shared by all postdoctoral fellows. Everyone’s individual experience is dependent on their supervisor

Cons

The pay. For someone with a PhD, doing high quality research, it’s almost offense how poorly postdoctoral fellows are paid. Not only is it not commensurate with our education level, it hasn’t kept apace with the rising cost of living in the DMV area
