Pros

Obviously, the NIH is probably one of the only places in the US where you can do cutting-edge biomedical research with fairly flexible budgets. For postdocs, they also provide opportunities to attend meetings, although this has decreased during my time here due to the budget crunch.

Cons

The salary for a postdoctoral fellow is absolutely horrible. I have been here for 5 years and we have had no pay increases, while the cost of living goes up and up and up. Living in the DC region on the pay they give is pretty much impossible unless you are willing to give up comfort - who works hard enough to get a PhD in order to do that? You had better be married with a second income, and preferably without children if you want to make it work. It is very depressing when there are technicians without anything beyond a Bachelor's Degree making twice what postdocs make, and they get benefits too.

Pros

World-class resources and excellent scientists abound. The research opportunities available at NIH are superb for clinical, transitional, and basic research.

Cons

As a junior scientist (Post-Bacc IRTA), I spent far more of my time dealing with red tape than I would have were I doing the same research at a private institution. Scientific projects were often delayed for months at a time due to paperwork being lost and purchases delayed, etc. Facilities (buildings) were grossly inadequate for the current number of staff -- my advisor's "office" was a converted closet in a service corridor, behind a collection of tanks of compressed gasses.

Pros

benefits, smart people, academic atmosphere, great mission, ability to work with people from all over the country and the world, less political than other agencies, beautiful main campus, committed employees

Cons

government bureaucracy, very big, unable to recognize value of non phd's, expansion of offices to suburbs leaves some people feeling disconnected from the organization, can be difficult to find your place in such a large organization
