Good company to work for before the oil price crash

Pros

Large interesting company with good possibilities of career progression when times were good and oil prices were still high. A large variety of product lines to work with. Tasks are varied and often exciting. Friendly co-workers and managers (depends on the department). Average pay and benefits.

Cons

Poor synergy between the various departments within NOV. Some divisions do their own thing and do not carry others along. This sometimes make it difficult to deliver a complete suite of products and services to clients. This also led to some departments within NOV hiring externally recruits while other departments were laying off workers. As a result, many talented workers were laid off when they could easily have been transferred to other departments that needed their expertise.

Great place to learn and grow Not many career opportunities outside of Middle East or Houston Friendly and eager staff Lots of large company perks

Cons

Organizational changes have taken the focus away from people, so they are seen as nothing more than a commodity. Employee appreciation is the first thing to be removed in a poor economy. Management structure has removed all decision making from employees, very difficult to get anything done. Very frustrating. In the downturn, very poor decisions were made regarding layoffs. Became a very stressful workplace. Very little career prospects in most positions.
