No Accountability Within Management

Pros

You get a pay check.

Cons

Toxic work environment. The problem with this agency is accountability. Non-managers continue to get assigned as scapegoats on behalf of management to disguise the real issue(s). The culture within the agency is not very progressive. Communication within this agency is non-existent and as a result there is so much unneeded duplication of services. When incompetent leaders are held accountable for their actions/in-actions and until this agency is brought back to reality this agency will continue to operate and base it's mission on delusions. If you have integrity this place will not be for you.

Pros

There are some really great missions and offices to work on. You may have to hunt for them to get them. The leave can be good. They allow for you to buld up extra time that you can take off later. Most senior employees get enough leave to take a month off with out additional work hours.

Cons

Don't always know what your office will be like before you get there. Most employees can leave for a salary increase doing a similar job in the Defense contractors. Some leave and double their salaries. Promotions and wage increases are somewhat random at times. The cost of living freezes make it harder and harder to stay in the area.

Pros

There are incredible opportunities for training and further education. Great work-life balance with lots of vacation time Job satisfaction and a good mission Easily work a diverse set of projects in one employer for an entire career

Cons

The compensation (ie salary) is not competitive with the defense contractors There tend to be some 'unengaged' employees that are just showing up every-day until they retire in a few years (say 5 to 10). Much of the technical/hands-on work is actually performed by contractors Many of the most talented folks tend to work for the contractors, so there are fewer mentors Some tendency for micro-management Lots of bureaucracy
