      Pros

      Great community of people in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. May amazing conversations to be had and many great academic resources - you have access to some amazing domain experts!

      Cons

      This depends A LOT on your advisor, but it seems that it is not uncommon to have to fight for time to work on personal academic projects (i.e., things related to your final disertation). There are always a million fires to be put out on the advisor's research projects, and this can VERY often get in the way of making progress toward actually getting your degree.
