Employees Are Not Valued

Pros

There is a pension plan.

Cons

Even though 2014 was an excellent year for the company's earnings, most employees didn't get a raise. The only employees who seem to like working for this company are the employees who've worked for Northern Trust their entire careers, and they manage, and are managed, by fear. Everyone else is surviving until they can move on. There's virtually no opportunity for growth, advancement or promotion for most employees, and the hiring practices have gone downmarket to save money. Most new hires are right out of college, or a few years out of college, and not too bright.

Good place to work

Pros

Some really nice people work there, and some of them really know their stuff. They have a lot of technology projects, and bright people at the top running them. They're a major market maker and a very reputable old Chicago institution. Some people have been there for decades.

Cons

The organization is a bit bureaucratic, so things take time to get approval. It seems, some people do about 30 minutes of real work every other day. Others work unpaid overtime to pick up the slack. Agressive offshore recruiting onsite derails many a project. They have some pretty old tech there and need to cut the cord.
