Pros

Solid training program They pay for your licenses and classes

Cons

Commission only Now, here's the fun part. I was hired, worked through the onboarding processes, passed the exam and received my insurance certifications. After I worked out my two weeks (which I put in at a time my mentor suggested so that the schedule meshed well) and right after my last day at my previous employer, they contacted me to say I should just look for employment elsewhere. Out of concerns that they didn't want to put me in a position where I couldn't pay my bills (takes time to accrue commissions). Yet, they had put me in that position anyway, even more so since I was out two jobs. Other reasonings were based on my personal bank account, which they never actually saw. And this topic had already been touched upon after the first interview (out of 3 total). We were also pressed to compose a list of 200 people to contact to start our book of business. It was not made clear to me that this apparently had to be 200 people we knew or associated with. Unfortunately, I don't even know this many people and despite actually having a list of over 300, they still had concerns. There was a lot of effort wasted and high stress regarding the entire situation.

Pros

They provided us free coffee.

Cons

Recruiters are desperate and will tell you anything to get you in. No financial training whatsoever. Mentors are only in it for joint work. The training received is for life insurance and all the different ways to ask your friends and family for their contacts that you can call. The only financial training I received is when I was studying for the FINRA exams on my own. If you have a job, do not leave it for this. They promise you big earnings, but there were some FAs who had been there for over a year and hadn't broken the $100k barrier. Also, in some cases they hold your commission in an escrow account and disburse it to you over the course of 24 months in case the clients cancel their policy. They don't tell you that until the end of training. Unless you are a recent graduate with a degree in finance or have financial background and a network that knows you as a finance person, you will struggle and find no support, and leave. No one will ask you why you left, they do not care about you.

Pros

- Personal Development Resources - Leadership Opportunities - Training Resources - Supportive and Collaborative Teams- locally and Nationally - Mentorship with Subject Matter Experts - Public Appreciation - Rewards Trips for Outstanding Work I've worked for several large name brand corporations with the tenure to prove it and not a single one of them provide the level of resources or personal development that Northwestern Mutual does. I'm proud to work for a company and location that is hyper focused on having a thorough interview and onboarding process as well as coaching for the duration of the career. It's a shame when I see reviews from people who do not want to put in the effort to succeed then trash a company that gives a very clear interpretation of the role right in the interview process.

Cons

The Financial Representative/Advisor role is not one that is easy by any means. We never advertise it as easy. Reviews claiming "they had me do this or that" are all based on the work ethic and determination that an individual has in themselves to succeed as a BUSINESS OWNER. It's not easy owning your business, but when you have the resources of a Fortune 100 company, it's on the individual to take the initiative and learn just as much as they want from the opportunity. At the end of the day, a person taking on the role needs to be intentional about the outcomes they want. They also need to have the maturity to make sure this is financially feasible for them.
