Terrible management in the HRCS

Pros

The only forms of leadership that seem to be present are focused on employee support and payroll, with little attention given to fostering a positive, growth-oriented work culture.

Cons

Ive held my tongue for a few years, now working in a healthy work environment again, I believe warning people of the culture within the HRSC at Nutrien. I’ve had significant concerns regarding the leadership styles of both the Onboarding Supervisor and the Data Admin Leader. It appears that they may be relatively new to leadership roles and may not have received formal training in leadership skills, which could be contributing to their current approach. Unfortunately, their behavior has been less than constructive, with instances of speaking poorly about team members (on their teams and higher lever leadership) to each other and within the broader organization. This type of communication creates a toxic atmosphere that undermines morale and trust within the team. Furthermore, employees are consistently guarding and protecting each other, a clear sign of the negative impact this leadership is having on team dynamics. Instead of fostering a collaborative, open environment, it seems the culture has become one of constant vigilance and self-preservation. Both individuals also appear to focus heavily on tactical execution as to how to manipulate senior leadership rather than fostering a positive, supportive work culture. Their interactions with senior leadership seem to be strategically managed, but it’s becoming evident that these dynamics are affecting team cohesion and employee well-being. In my years of experience in HR, I’ve rarely encountered an environment where this type of leadership is prevalent, and I believe senior leadership should investigate these concerns further to ensure a healthier, more effective workplace for all. To top it off, they have a revolving door of contractors because of how poorly they are treated compared to full time employees.

Pros

Decent bonuses, a lot of great coworkers, potential for promotions due to vacated positions and large size of org.

Cons

The Engineering team has averaged a new Director about once per year. Digital org in general also has a lot of turnover in Management/Directors/C-suite. This creates a generally chaotic environment where employees do not know what to focus on as the targets change constantly. Most recent Engineering Director rumored to have quit after trying to blame failures on everything but themself (and after laying off many layers of people with deep domain knowledge), and attempting to throw fellow Directors under the bus in the process. Layoffs of Engineering leads that were promoted into leadership positions when the company could have given many of them the option to return to individual contributors as the org ended up hiring more IC's shortly thereafter. Teams that are successfully and consistently delivering are often having to defend themselves against re-writing systems, DB's, DB models, and tech stacks by existing and new management/teams even though those teams current stacks/technologies are hardly outdated; the people recommending the changes often do not understand the nuances of the products they are attempting to rewrite. Leaders that do stand up against unnecessary changes are often targeted as being disagreeable. Teams that re-write due to the pressure often do not deliver properly. Teams recommending the re-writes are often very intelligent and well spoken but seem to be doing so for unnecessary reasons (shiny new tech) or job security.

Pros

* Great opportunity to get an IT role you are probably not quite experienced enough for yet. * Lots of IT opportunity, if you are able to acquire the budget and just do all of it yourself. * If you are a Crop Consultant and just want to be selling in a car with a piece of paper.

Cons

* Very political environment. * Leadership does not understand nor care about IT or any data/technical role. * More tech debt than any place you will find * Leadership is made up entirely of Agricultural folk and many high level leaders question the value of even the most foundational technical systems * IT Leadership is made up of careerists who always say yes, thus foundational IT systems are garbage and requirements are always shifting. * Pay is lower compared to competitors, results in the vast majority of IT folk being more novice, further perpetuating tech debt * I am in data, we have been trying to get a basic sales tables for over 5 years with over 400 hours of meetings. The basic requirements have still not been met. * No data catalog system or documentation systems, knowledge of systems are entirely based on seniority of having worked with them and failed historically. * IT lacks business analysts, resulting in almost no actual IT development designed or considered by people who both understand the business and IT. * While Corp. is trying to focus on diversity & inclusion, in the field and up to Sr. Directors, you will hear a lot of racist / discriminatory / questionable things. * No meaningful mentoring or training opportunities. * IT workforce largely made up on contractors due to all of the above issues, resulting in constantly changing landscape that compounds all above problems.
