Some corporate/financial restrictions on creativity since it's a large, financial company.

Pros

Overall: Many, many outstanding and intelligent employees with many years of financial investment experience. Beautiful office environment with many typical employment perks (i.e. free lunch, free parking, flexible work hours) Most of your co-workers will eventually become good friends, and thats a testament to the type of labor force the company attracts.

Cons

Management at times has a tendency to micro-management. Mainly due to them believing that their way is truly the best way. No a lot of flexibility is given to think outside the box. Depending on the project you might be involved with, there are many personalities one must deal with. Most projects are fairly large and therefore you will be confronted with many chiefs acting as a senior manager. Exceedingly difficult to get salary increases or promotions with the company. I suspect its due to the management style. If they deem you to be micro-managed you can truly forgot about any promotion or salary increase.

Pros

Most of the perks of working at Nuveen are no longer there (free lunches, chiropractor and massage, etc.)

Cons

HR Senior Management and IT Senior Management were not qualified for their roles and fell into the office politics instead of focusing on the true root or cause of consistent problems. They did not come from investment management backgrounds. They were clearly "yes people" and pawns for executive management. The constant battle between Chicago and LA was ridiculous. It should be recognized that different cities and offices have different cultures and style and one single method or process will not work for all.
