Pros

As a fellow, you are pretty much left to your own devices, which I appreciate as an independent and motivated researcher. The salary is also very competitive.

Cons

I've never actually met anyone who represents my contract. The lack of benefits is difficult for an employee who after a lifetime of being a student would like to start having real benefits like a 401k.

Pros

Great opportunity to work inside NASA centers without many bureaucracy attachment. Reasonable paid. Come with travel funding not restricted to many NASA rules.

Cons

No benefit except the partial health insurance coverage. Depending on the host institute, sometimes it comes with restriction of being leading investigators for funding proposals.
