Pros

We are growing significantly even though the rest of the economy is in recession. The company is beginning to recognize that it needs to catch up with the times. The new CEO is taking action to gather feedback from employees to make the company better and more competitive.

Cons

Change is hard. High performance is not recognized or rewarded by the culture, management, or system unless you have been at the company for over 20 years. It takes a long time as a newcomer to figure out how things work or to have your opinion accepted as being equal to someone who has been around for a long time, even if one is being hired for a specific expertise.

Pros

Very secure. Genuine and nice people. Supportive and understanding of family obligations. People are caring and they have a lot of parties to celebrate important events in people's lives. There are a lot of close friendships between staff. It is a very egalitarian and collegial environment. For some employees it can be a very flexible place to work. The interagency agreement is a wonderful mechanism for contracting and allows us to do a lot of interesting work and work with some of the most interesting and pressing issues that are going on. I like the diversity of the work opportunities.

Cons

Compensation compared to similar type jobs with other consulting companies and the Fed is low, but for the local economy it is pretty good. Performance is not rewarded adequately. There is a lack of fairness as to who and what gets rewarded. Overhead funding for program staff is limited therefore training and professional development opportunities are limited. Senior management are mostly all over the age of 50 and they are reluctant to groom and bring in new people to the upper management structure. The culture tends to disdain ambitious and high-energy staff members. It takes a long time to learn and navigate the ins and outs of working there.

Pros

For postdoctoral researchers, placement in a national lab can be a great learning experience. However, any positives of the post-doc and career advancement are due to the specific project and mentor and not to Oak Ridge's management of the program.

Cons

The salaries and benefits they provide to very skilled, recent phds is completely inadequate. Post-docs can often just be treated as 'free labor' if they are not proactive with their mentors and diligent about their own professional development. ORAU does not advocate for the postdocs or take an interest in the mentoring process, or progress of a postdoc's project after they accept the position.
