Pros

This is a really ambitious company with big projects going on all the time There's plenty of opportunity to shape how things are done I'm working with loads of great people Management are making a real effort to retain an exciting vibe despite the corporate setting There is a nice range of social and non-work groups and activities to get involved with

Cons

Hatfield isn't the most inspiring location Sometimes there's so much going on, it's difficult to get enough focus on the projects you're involved with - there can be a lot of context switching

Pros

Lots of freedom to innovate, great colleagues, deeply complex and interesting projects.

Cons

Communication between teams is not great. Management of projects often lacks a single technical authority, so the architecture of the systems often evolve organically, resulting in a less than ideal outcome in terms of maintainability, flexibility and optimality. Regarding pay, someone with my skills could earn a lot more elsewhere.

Thanks for the great review, and for your feedback about technical authority for project management. We'll pass that on to be looked at.

Pros

The technology is much more exciting and cutting edge than you'd think, and there are loads of different projects going on – which means you get to meet people with all sorts of specialisms and backgrounds. Generally people are friendly and happy to help out if you need it. Also, check out Code for Life, which is a free teaching initiative the company has created for schools. It's mostly developed by volunteers and is a good way to get to know people from different areas of the division.

Cons

Hatfield itself isn't very interesting. It does have countryside and pubs etc nearby, and isn't far from London.

Code for Life is also open source, if anyone wants to get involved in developing the Rapid Router game or the portal. Go to Ocado Technology on Github and look for Rapid Router or Code for Life.
