Used to be great, now a terrible place to work as a developer

Pros

Free lunches that usually taste good. Probably still a great place to work as a trader. Potentially a good stepping stone to other HFTs.

Cons

Used to be great, but then the old management was replaced by bean counters that don't value technology. To cut IT costs, instead of honest redundancies, they gave artificially low performance reviews to developers en masse to force people out. An awful place to work as a developer now because it's really hard to get recognition or promotion. Used to be BRW's Number 1 Place To Work in Australia (2013), now not even in the top 50.

Cons

Future at the firm depends on your direct manager who might very well fire you on the last day of your probation with feedback that was not given at any point in the prior 26 weeks, despite weekly feedback sessions.

Toxic culture in once-upon-a-time nice place to work

Pros

There are some really nice and smart people. Work can be interesting. Having barista on site is quite nice.

Cons

Shame those nice people are not in position to make change. Optiver used to be nice place to work. Then management and HR decided that people can more productive if they are told that everything they do can be better or done faster. Toxic culture of blame. People become withdrawn due to the excessive load and expectations. Some teams are worse than others. If someone decides a person should go, they will be bullied out of company using performance improvement program. If you are going through hiring, make sure to ask proper base salary since your bonus depends on rating and that is at mercy of management.
