Embrace the suck

Pros

Good benefit package. Health insurance is reasonably priced. The 401k could be better. They offer employee assistance.

Cons

The culture at Oracle is to embrace the suck. Long hours are expected. Employees live with a constant fear of layoffs. There's little organization and it's a sink-or-swim situation. Upper management is reactionary, rather than proactive, and completely tone deaf. The company doesn't have managers, they have micromanagers. Many bounce from division to division with no relevant experience in the particular area in which they find themselves. Although the company is doing great financially, the legend is true: raises don't happen. The only way to get any significant salary bump is to be promoted (also rare) or to leave the company and come back. Many policies and direction happen on an executive's whim and the rantings of Larry, who seems more worried about his legacy and his influence than innovating. And let's face it, he runs the company. And he never fails to mention that he lives in Hawaii (on his own island). Often the work you put in to create and implement their vision is wasted because they simply decide to tank it or move on to something else. For a technology company, the technology for employees is sub-par.

Dishonest, Inconsistent, No Autonomy (anymore)

Pros

We have free vitamin water, iced tea, tea options and coke.

Cons

They have never been a company of their word. They said we would be remote. We’re not. They said we would be 2 days a week. That changed. They said we had the option to go the accout management route or the account executive role after 12 months. They changed that. You are now forced into one of those roles depending on what type of BDR you are PLUS the promotion process is now an 18 month long process with minimal to no training. Upper management will be kind to your face and pretend everyone is family, but then trash talk every employee there is. It is not a safe space. Lastly, do not believe them when they say they have faith in a strong next few months. Do not believe them if they say there will be no more layoffs. It is a real shame that the company has gone downhill so fast, it used to be so great.

Pros

Great benefits; overall culture in the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure org of Oracle is community-focused (which encourages team communications and transparency); relatively easy to transfer between teams as desired; options to work remotely, post-COVID; many projects available to work on, so your career can be a bit self-directed by team; a good measure of autonomy.

Cons

Persistent issues with top-down communication and direction; no practical support or training for managers, so many poor ones here; whistleblowers tend to be punished; review and promotion system is very broken (and was skipped entirely in 2020), leading to a lot of resentment and frustration; focus on hiring devs from competitors over hiring quality candidates where needed in the business is also causing resentment and frustration; suffers from the same sexism issues as most of tech (women rarely promoted into leadership, women paid less than their male counterparts); high-level execs seems disconnected from reality and their employees (one recently announced that "cost of living has gone down this year" as justification for no one below a specific managerial level getting COLAs).
