Disorganized, Avoidant Leadership and a Siloed Team Culture

Pros

- Snacks available, which helped reduce small daily expenses - A modest raise last year, though it didn’t keep pace with inflation - Hybrid work, though applied inconsistently across teams

Cons

- Avoidant, insular leadership that discouraged transparency and neglected the team’s actual needs. My manager rarely documented requests, skipped team meetings, and focused one‑on‑one conversations on irrelevant personal topics rather than work. - Unclear roles and no accountability. A colleague with a quasi–project‑management role controlled tools and processes but produced little work, missed deadlines, and held important meetings without including appropriate team members. When I asked for clarity on responsibilities, I was reprimanded. - Unrealistic expectations and shifting standards. Leadership frequently compared complex, multi‑step projects to much simpler tasks, dismissing the actual time and effort required. Reasonable explanations were met with frustration instead of support. - Role overload without proper support. Training to cover for other team members was scheduled on top of my existing workload, creating additional stress and leaving no time to absorb the material properly. - Siloed team culture. Team members only communicated when absolutely necessary, making collaboration uncomfortable and leaving major knowledge gaps. Covering for colleagues during overlapping vacations meant learning unfamiliar systems with no guidance. - Lack of support for professional development. Even basic initiatives, like learning new tools, were hindered by poor planning and mismanagement ~ for example, a trial AI license was used up by someone who couldn’t explain how it worked to the rest of the team. - Compensation below market. Pay was significantly lower than comparable roles, and raises did not reflect inflation or workload.
