Pros

You get to work with smart people on small team development projects. Everyone (except VP's) is expected to be technical.

Cons

Rather than capitalizing on a person's strengths, they want everyone to be the same. To fit a mold of "expectations". They tell you what to wear, what to say, how to act. If you don't fit the mold you're in the "out" crowd and don't get the choice assignments or promotions. Favortism is rampant. You are working 50 hours a week so the compensation is not that great when you factor in the hours. The promotion model is biased towards towards young, single college hires. It's difficult for experienced hires to fit in unless you've grown up in the organization or come in as a VP. The home office is in Dallas so you get this overbearing conservative attitude of "You're lucky to have a job" or punishment "That'll show up on your next review!"

Pros

The other consultants that I worked with were smart and not cut throat. Most of the work was local.

Cons

Do I really need six performance reviews my first year on the job ? I felt like people were constantly watching over my shoulder taking notes on every mistake I made. In a typical project there are 'ups' and 'downs' but if it ends on a positive note, then management is usually OK. Not at this company. The negatives were always pointed out, the positives were rarely noted. Their rationale was that it was "good for me" and was going to make me a better person. No thanks. This company was able to hold on to its consultants in a down market but as the economy improves, the best and brightest will go elsewhere. It's already happening especially in the hot markets like San Francisco and Seattle.

Pros

Nice consultants and associates. Almost no traveling required unless desired.

Cons

The standard is to work 50+ hours a week. Even if you've finished client work, you aren't allowed to complete training or internal work. Instead, you are asked to come up with more problems to fix so they can bill the client for 40 hours or more. Reviews are based greatly upon participating in events or projects outside of client work. If you aren't able to put in more than 10 hours outside of the 40 hours for client work on a weekly basis, this is not the company for you. Even though the "expectations framework" seems like a good idea in concept, in reality it becomes a standard used to judge your every move. If you don't fit the norm exactly, you will end up with unfavorable projects. Diversity seems to be greatly discouraged. Reviews tend to focus on criticism with very little positive feedback. Even if you have improved upon something that was criticized in your last review, the problems (despite the improvements) will still be reflected on future reviews for months/years to come. Management can pick and choose who they receive feedback from, so you will not be given a chance to provide any feedback for them unless they like you. Employees are expected to be salespeople for potential projects. VPs basically spend all day "networking" to sell potential projects. If you want to pursue a career in sales, then this is a great company for you. Otherwise, you may want to look elsewhere.
