Pros

- Everyone has lives outside of work and in turn stay flexible in order to accommodate others. As long as employees get their work done and participate in the meetings they've agreed to, it's no problem to take some time during the nominal workday to run errands, take care of kids, go to doctor's appointments, or get some exercise. - Everyone contributes to a culture that promotes learning and problem solving. If an employee doesn't know something, their co-workers will point them to resources or give them a direct hand. If someone makes a mistake, people pitch in to mitigate and resolve the issue rather than appoint blame. - My co-workers, both inside and outside of my department, work hard, help out, and are genuinely ethical.

Cons

- Salaries fall well below industry standards, especially for more senior members of the team. Our yearly pay "raises" that don't even match inflation. - Benefits are mediocre. When the office was open, this was mitigated somewhat by the fun perks but without that, it's clear that a low 401k match with a long vesting period simply doesn't cut it. - Upper management is incredibly secretive about anything that might make the company look bad: compensation, turnovers, future investment, layoffs, etc. Direct contributors and even lower management are informed of basic decisions only at the last moment (at best!). - As a result of the above, current employees are leaving in droves, which strongly mitigates all of the grassroots-originated pros I mentioned (i.e., all of them).

Pros

The best thing about working at PaySimple is my co-workers. No matter how busy they are, they're always helpful, friendly, and compassionate. People who aren't in my division will happily lend a hand if I need it, and it contributes to a very positive atmosphere that makes me happy to go into work. Management at every level pays attention to their reports, and in turn does an excellent job of ensuring that everyone understands company-wide objectives, as well as the goals and achievements of other divisions. Management clearly cares about employee safety, and has done an excellent job of ensuring that employees can work from home effectively. Work-life balance is excellent (probably the best I've experienced at any company). Management has entirely reasonable expectations of employees, and everyone is encouraged to work reasonable hours. People are encouraged to take the time off they need or want to spend with family, relax, and otherwise be healthy and happy. Up-front pay is competitive.

Cons

While the management of PaySimple itself is good and they do what they can, it's clear that they're constrained by the owners of PaySimple's umbrella company. The umbrella company has forced layoffs, costing PaySimple years of invaluable experience. These layoffs were not needed to maintain solvency or even profitability, but were simply to satisfy short-term budget goals. So employees can be productive and working in divisions with absolutely amazing profit margins, yet still not know if they're going to be laid off tomorrow. All of this would be a worthwhile trade-off if the overall compensation were good, but that just isn't the case. While the up-front pay is competitive, there are no bonuses and no means for employees to acquire equity. Employees worried about their future at PaySimple have voluntarily left the company, which costs the company yet more experience. Several of these positions have not been back-filled due to budgetary constraints.
