Pros

Penn State is a large University with a personal touch. The intellectual capital and diverse population of the community help create a collaborative, challenging and dynamic work environment. Compared to other higher education institutions at which I have worked (3 others), Penn State is hands down the best employer in terms of internal communication; training, growth and development of employees; and the sense of pride and community instilled in those who work there.

Cons

Similar to many higher education institutions reward in a non-profit enterprise is based on an across the board salary increase each year, with a small amount of funding available for merit rewards for staff. So, if you work very very hard you are rewarded with a moderately high raise and if you work very, very little you are rewarded with a moderately low raise. Also, it is often bureaucratic and difficult to manage problem employees.

Pros

Good school for a graduate student. The school has good research facilities. The school has good athletics facilities or students that are very reasonably priced.

Cons

If you pay tuition to go to school as a graduate student then it can be expensive.

Pros

Good Benefits Package. Lots of vacation time. Lots of sick time. Lots of paid holidays. All together you get about 10 weeks off per year. You don't work overtime. Health benefits and retirement plans are also good. Cost of living in the area is low. It's really a small town, but there are a good amount of things to do because of the university. If you like to watch college sports, this is a very good place.

Cons

Pay is less than it would be elsewhere. It's a small town and doesn't have the attractions of a major city. Although you are relatively close to some major cities, there is really nothing within 3 hours of you.
