Pros

Pros...It's a job? If you absolutely, 100%, need to work somewhere at this very moment then, by all means, work at Pennmark. I made the same choice when faced with the prospect of accepting their offer and moving into a full time design/marketing position or working a regular job while doing freelance gigs on the side to pad my resume. I did my research when I applied, read the reviews both here and on Google, and knew what I was getting into. I also knew that I needed solid work experience. That's what this position gave me, the ability to move on to something better. If you're reading this and you're making the same consideration I did take this advice: Keep your resume polished and your eyes on the next opportunity. One other pro that I could take from this experience: as one of the worst working experiences of my life, it makes everything else a breeze. If you can wake up every morning and go to this place and get through the day you can work anywhere.

Cons

Management is absolutely horrible. The CEO's approach to management is to yell and make threats. The CFO's approach is condescension and passive-aggressive language. To show that I'm not just coming on here to throw an entire company under the bus due to a bad experience: the Construction Manager wasn't bad, he expected a lot from you but would sit down and take the time to go through things with you, answer any questions you had, and generally try to help you out. Their turnover rate is horrendous and alarming. People would come and go so quickly that it wasn't worth getting to know them until it seemed like they were going to last longer than a week. They have this whole approach, a part of their process, where they just throw you in the deep end of the pool and expect you to know or figure out how to swim. I feel like this helped contribute to their turnover issue; people that couldn't keep up or adapt quickly enough weren't considered to be company material. They would talk about this fact like they were proud of it, like it made them a bigger, better company because people couldn't keep up with them. They openly speak poorly of current/former employees. The atmosphere is tense, and not the "high pressure workplace" kind of tense. The only time I ever really saw people relax was when the CEO and/or CFO were out for the day. Their pay and benefits are a joke. I was offered a ridiculously low hourly rate, the lowest I've ever been offered in my line of work, and the benefits as described were terrible.

Pros

Opportunity for entire building inspections

Cons

These guys are manipulative who set newly hired employees up for failure. They appear to "manage" multiple properties yet create a revolving door atmosphere. When they offer a full-time office and field position with full healthcare benefits, they don't even show up the first day to greet the employee. No introduction, no orientation, not even a single piece of paperwork is provided. There is no plan or agenda. The very first day the employee is told to find something to do in the field and report back to the office. Then, on one roof building, when M/E are found to be in poor condition, the job becomes triage. The employee is expected to work nonstop on the building with no time for lunch. Basic OSHA standards are not followed. On the second day, the employee is given a company shirt. Still without any healthcare coverage which was a term of employment, the employee is commanded to continue working on the roof building using his own power tools and hand tools. The employee even provides essential hardware the company does not have in inventory. When the employee follows company protocol and completes multiple tasks within the first two days, the employee is seemingly favored. After four grueling days, the employee is finally given paperwork to sign which includes an employee manual and full healthcare coverage. Then, without any warning, the employee is asked to return the company shirt for no reason. The employee is treated with contempt. He is asked to leave. The company has no intention of paying the employee. The working individual was never an employee but was scammed into thinking he was an employee. After making three separate return trips to the office, it takes the loyal working individual over a month to receive only partial payment for the work that was satisfactorily completed.

Pros

Initially thought pro's would be that the environment is small and I can wear many hats. Small environment here ended up being a con, considering I was watched over every moment I was there.

Cons

CFO seems to mean well. Takes orders from the owner. The owner is old and tired of both people in general and coming into the office. He doesn't trust any of the employees. There are no doors in the offices because owner wants to hear you on phone calls to make sure your working. Expected to know and comprehend the entire portfolio within 48 hours. Paid dirt but asked to spend nights and weekends driving around to see properties... with NO pay or overtime. Frowned upon to have a second job on nights or weekends for additional income. Mgmt consistently talked down on former employee's and how they just "didn't work" .. Save yourself the time. I got treated terribly here.
