Always get ahead with your education and certifications or you could be stuck!
Pros
It is a decent starting point for your IT career. Most people entering the IT workforce with no IT experience start at Helpdesk or as a PC Technician. But it is very important to continue your education and gaining certifications for bigger positions. They work well with school schedules. You can receive VISA gift card bonuses at the end of the year if the IT department is able to do so. I believe it is based of the amount of money the department as a whole has left over for bonuses and is based on the amount of hours you worked for the year. It does not happen every year though.
Cons
This position requires 3rd shifts if you are a per diem/part time employee. You will have to stay up overnight which became difficult for me to do after doing it so often. Helpdesk as a whole gets overlooked for their hard work. You can literally work your self to death and do your job very well but still get over looked but pointed out when you make the smallest mistake. It is very difficult to advance your career here. Many of the upper level IT departments such as the Analyst department and IT Security departments are only there to help whoever they are friends with. They seem to look down upon the Helpdesk employees and can be "clickish". Not to sound bitter but if you can avoid this place, do so. I'm sure not all Helpdesk positions are like this.
