A mixed bag

Pros

A highly relational culture with a good CEO in a relatively stable industry.

Cons

A weak officer team that plays games with employees. If someone trashes you, you rarely get a chance to set the record straight. A culture of gossip rather than directness and fact. Posturing is common and it gets in the way of healthy conversations. And their competitive posture will soon be eroded due to innovations that will surely disrupt their monopoly. They are struggling with shrinking budgets as we speak.

Pros

Not any at this point in time for this company.

Cons

Hires contract and temporary employees stating able to apply for regular full-time positions after one year. Yes, you do have the ability to apply for open positions, but if you're not already a regular full-time employee or related to someone in the company don't waste your time.

Pros

The #1 reason is the people. My experience is that the rank and file are all really good and dedicated to the work and their teammates. After watching my wife get laid off twice through the great recession I have appreciated the security of working for a utility. The location of the HQ is fantastic.

Cons

Too many old school managers who dont know how to manage young people and a changing workforce (or dont care to change their style). The quality of the senior executives vary greatly, and if you are in the wrong organization it can be death by a million micromanaged cuts. Does not promote based on merit, still an organization where seniority is favored over ability. Little to no work flexibility, still a big "cheeks in seats" culture.
