Pros

Intelligent and motivated people. Abundant academic resources. Great support resources and staff. The institution strives to be the best. Good library facilities. Good circulation of news and research. Small community. Great cultural offerings.

Cons

Unspoken practice that you're working all the time. Driven, ambitious people who don't always act ethically in their efforts to get ahead. Research focus can over-ride human aspect. Graduate students are treated poorly. Often seen to be active, but not willing to make fundamental changes that make a difference. Too much money gets wasted on unessentials, while graduate students are unpaid and the resources could be used for better academic benefit.

Pros

Great support staff. Subsidized housing which is almost guaranteed for younger graduate students. Pays better than most other graduate schools. First year fellowship for all graduate students. Top-notch facilities. Some of the best professors available to work with.

Cons

Long hours in lab - expect to come in on weekends. Also expect a couple all nighters and 100 hour weeks. Town is isolated. Professors are demanding. Difficult qualifying exams.

Pros

It's a great place to be a student. If you stay in one place long enough, research money is bound to fall into your lap. Library resources can't be beat.

Cons

There can be intense competition among peers, though this varies from department to department. Mine was rather collegial. The town and surrounding area is an expensive place to live.
