Urban Planner: Paid to Relocate to Wichita from Chicago. Laid off 13 months later
Pros
PEC paid a relocation bonus and awarded me raise within less than a year on the job, which was generous. They also provided salary with paid overtime, which was a nice incentive (but there were long hours). Planning projects took me all over the state, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I also did volunteer work with my chapter professional association.
Cons
Work dried up barely a year into my job, and I was laid off about 12 months after relocating from Chicago, and only 3 months after I was given a salary raise. For the last 3 months I worked about 60 hours on a hard deadline for an environmental planning job and then was let go. Senior management failed at their job to bring in more work for me, and my own immediate supervisor didn't even show up to my termination interview. There was a huge cultural difference between Chicago and Wichita, so I felt very alienated.
