Great place for independent staff

Pros

Accomplished colleagues, powerful programs, a diversity of issue and focus areas. Programs run independently with administrative support from central staff and office, no micromanagement or barriers to work from central office.

Cons

Programs run themselves, meaning they are expected to bring in their own funding. Very little support for organizational development or fundraising. Since they run so independently, programs are often very siloed despite sharing PHI as their parent organization. Central office is very supportive within its capacity.

Pros

As an organization, I really felt PHI cared about it's employees personally and professionally. Pay was very good if you knew to negotiate, and raises came yearly. Benefits were excellent, though fairly expensive if relying on them for a family. As an employee, you pay into SDI, so I was able to take nice long maternity leaves. In my position, I was not micromanaged, yet at times there was a complete lack of guidance...especially when I first started. I had zero introduction to my job duties or expectations. Though I had to aggressively advocate for my promotions, it was worth it to work with some very seasoned and talented staff who taught me a lot.

Cons

- Faily expensive benefits - At times, too little guidance from supervisor - Not enough oversight of senior management at our site; many complaints about Program Director after numerous staff were mistreated, yet seemed like HR was unaware
