Pros

I'm a cashier. The job itself isn't so bad, but repetitive. The customers and many of my co-workers make it enjoyable.

Cons

The pay, benefits, and a few employees seem to ruin it for the majority of good workers. I've complained to my direct manager, store manager and it has fallen on deaf ears -- nothing is ever done for egregious behavior. The communication between management themselves and the employees is the WORST I've ever seen in any company I've ever worked for. They have no regard for your personal life, often calling frequently to ask you come in at the last minute because somebody scheduled called in sick. **Pay people a decent wage and benefits and you actually get people to show up!** I have always showed up on time and have been professional on the job, getting great reviews and raves from customers (on a regular basis). I was told when I was hired that I could move up quickly if I worked hard and I have, but that's not been the case. I was also told I could "go full-time" but Publix now has a freeze on allowing that I'm now told. I've wasted over two years with that company and I'm looking for other employment. Many of the managers are ineffective managers and do not know how to motivate and cultivate good employees, or to retain them. Many of my permanent part-time (not seasonal, temporary) co-workers in the two years I've worked there, have left. They are there to make a living, not for fun!!! Very frustrating -- low pay, lousy benefits, and they treat you like an indentured servant. I've worked for several large corporations in various capacities and this has been my worst experience yet.

Pros

Benefits are very good with Publix. Stocks, both given and employee purchased. Salaries for supervisors and management are also very good. Friendly employees. Publix hires minors and people with disabilities more than any other company I know of.

Cons

Scheduling is horrific! Many times you will be asked to close the store one night, then open again the next morning, getting little or no sleep. If you are part time, you may limit your availability, but, you will only get a few hours a week. If you offer Publix an open availability, they will abuse your time beyond belief. Inconsistent scheduling. You'll rarely have the same schedule twice. And finally with the implementation of Publix new system, your old job description is tossed out. Cashiers are no longer just cashiers. Now we have to bag, clean, mop, sweep the parking lot, empty garbage, and carry groceries to customer's cars and load them. None of these tasks were ever expected from cashiers before. Publix motto: Increase the workload, but keep the same salary.
