Mistreated

Pros

After 3 years of employment you can keep your publix stock even if you leave the company.

Cons

All levels of management pretty much encourage customers to mistreat you. The company has unrealistic deadlines for the excessive amount of work they give you, plus they keep adding to the work load as the year goes on. Customers think you're their slave to mistreat and verbally abuse as they see fit. Oh, I misspelled your son's name because you didn't double check your copy of the cake order form, here key me fix that it'll take LITERALLY 5 seconds. "No, no, no! Ugh it's ruined this whole day is ruined! You idiots had one job! I want my $60 cake free! " and then management gives them the cake free.... this would happen at least 3 times a day even if nothing was wrong with the cake!

Stuck in the past

Pros

Average starting pay is higher than similar jobs. Career progression is clearly laid out and you can fill out an ROI (Registration of Interest) for just about any job/department.

Cons

Long hours with no breaks. They can work you five and a half hours, give you a thirty minute, unpaid lunch break, and then work you another five and a half hours. And they will do it. There is no minimum time between shifts. They can and will work you till almost midnight and then schedule you to come back in at 6 AM the following morning. No benefits are available until after you've worked there a year and even then, only if you've worked a certain number of hours for the previous year Raises are based on six month evaluations which are subjective qualities your manager or supervisor rate you on. Don't get along with your boss? No raise. Management will never back you up, even if you follow the rules. The customer is, quite literally, always right. If you follow the rules and the customer becomes upset, management will override you and the chastise you for following company policy. If you don't follow the rules in the first place however, you will be written up and/or fired. Management doesn't understand that not everyone wants to make a career out of Publix. If you're going to school for something, they think that after you've spent thousands of dollars on your degree, you're going to stay with the company as a cashier for the rest of your life. They will stare at you like you're crazy when you inform them you plan to leave.
