Pros

They pay in state tuition and your room and board. Training can be tedious but parts of it will totally prepare you for the position. You can build a great community and with the right staff you can have a wonderful experience. It is wonderful to graduate with much less debt than I was anticipating.

Cons

Paying in-state tuition is not necessarily enough. You are on "duty" four nights a week but any time they can call you back to deal with a situation. I have been called on several occasions to come back on several occasions to deal with roommate conflicts. You are with your staff constantly, so it can get difficult working with them. It is very difficult to have a work-life balance. You work where you live so it's hard to separate work from your personal life. You MUST be good at time management (or you will be by the time you're done) or your grades will suffer. Many first year RA's will drop out at semester because they can't handle it.

Pros

The surrounding community is small, but is close in proximity to Indianapolis. Consequently, cost of living is low. The West Lafayette School District is excellent, but housing within the district limits is significantly more expensive. You can work with some of the most intelligent people in a variety of fields.

Cons

As a graduate student, pay is ridiculously low. Other graduate programs in similar cost of living areas pay 50% more. Long hours, much longer than the 20 hours per week you are being paid.

Pros

Very flexible work hours, depending on the professor. Very laid back environment, steady income, not nearly as much pressure as in industry.

Cons

Work hours actually vary from 5 hours a week to upwards of 80 hours a week. Professors sometimes forget you're actually there to go to school!
