Pros

An engineering graduate degree at Purdue will place you at a competative advantage when compared to your peers at other institutions. The network of contacts you will make will give you a good chance at a good job even while the economy is turning south. Also, the work here is as hands on as you want to make it; you can truly be involved in the design, development, testing, and evaluation of your own project while a Master's student.

Cons

The biggest downside of working at Purdue is the bureaucracy. Whether it comes in the form of walking between three different buildings on opposite sides of campus to verify that you're registered for classes or only being allowed to visit one in-network set of doctors that are on campus to get health screenings, it sometimes seems impossible to get anything accomplished.

Pros

Purdue has a decent reputation and good pay for their graduate assistants. The benefits, once deciphered, are not bad either.

Cons

Staff fees for each semester are a significant portion of graduate salaries. All healthcare is required to be first sought at the purdue student health center, but the quality of care there is generally sub par. If you have an accident after hours, the insurance company puts the burden on you to prove that you are not covered by other insurance and to provide details of the accident. This significantly delays the payment process.

Pros

Even though it is a state university, many outsiders assume it is a private university and in the same tier as Ivy League institutions. Use that reputation as a stepping stone to somewhere else.

Cons

Good Old Boy network. A former colleague who had worked in several different U.S. states and Europe said that getting a job on this campus was like "stepping through a time warp into the 1950s." Local job market is oversupplied with workers with multiple degrees, particularly highly educated faculty spouses who are tied here by tenure, and there's always someone with lots of credentials or an inside connection who will accept a lower salary.
