It's fine for a while

Pros

RFA is a decent place for a first engineering job. It can provide exposure to some major companies, and provide a great learning experience for the engineering process. You can put in extra time if there is work in order to bank hours for time off or extra pay. Some people who work on-site with customers are able to get hired on full time by the customer, but that usually takes many years. Overall, the health benefits and 401k match are fine. This year they rolled out a few new benefit options that are nice. RFA is growing, as many of the customers are currently doing well.

Cons

Once you get your initial burst of experience, you realize how much better it could be somewhere else. Working on-site for a customer, you miss out on many benefits that the employees have. If the customer has a vacation day when RFA does not, you need to either work extra time to make up for it, go unpaid for that day, or use what limited PTO you have. And the PTO is severely lacking, as you have to make due with one week per year until a few years in. There is the option to work extra time to use as PTO later, but that's just moving your working hours around rather than getting extra time off. The pay is also lacking for anything but an entry level engineer. I'm sure it's largely dictated by what they can charge for your time, and companies aren't gonna pay more than they need. It's frustrating listening to customer engineers you work with talk about how great their bonus is this year. The only bonus you'll get from RFA is a modest gift card in December. Overall, the total compensation is not worth sticking around for. Get some time under your belt and leverage it to get somewhere else.

Thank you for your feedback! I am glad that you find positives in your position, as we are continually trying to make all of our employees' experiences better within the bounds of how we and our customers do business. While we do not have a formal "end of the year bonus" program, we do as you mention, provide employees the option at the end of every quarter to either get paid a cash bonus for their earned bonus time, or they are able to convert those bonus qualifying hours to standard PTO. The goal is to achieve ultimate flexibility, and help prepare for unforeseen client shut-downs or non-standard holidays, or just to provide additional time off to spend with your friends and family. Nearly all of our clients' employees work with standard salary compensation, so many times, their bonus is not only tied to the success of their company, but also tied to effort put in during the year (working long hours with no extra pay). Regardless, I hear your cons, and just know that we as a company are doing what we can to address. Thank you for being part of the team! We appreciate everything you do!

Pros

Working with major companies Can get a "shoe in the door" at companies where it can be hard to land an interview Gain experience in your field Flexible hours in most cases (on-site)

Cons

Employees are treated as temporary/disposable Turnover at supervisor level and below is extremely high Management ignores or punishes criticism from employees Minimal advancement opportunities Pay is well below market rate Passive-aggressive/disingenuous management style at all levels As the company grows, infrastructure is not added to support employees Mediocre benefits Partner level and up is a bit of a good 'ol boys' club Seniority and relationships with management drive promotions instead of competency Decisions are continually consolidated to higher levels; employees are further removed from influence and consideration Financials are the priority at all times Supervisors and managers avoid giving negative feedback to avoid uncomfortable conversations but hold employees accountable to issues they don't know about Communication is poor across all levels Occasionally sketchy or problematic labor practices Supervisors and managers are overworked to the point that employee requests or needs are forgotten or overlooked; miscommunication is a continual issue No effort is made to make employees better engineers; employees must take the initiative themselves to develop skills and improve their knowledge

I sincerely apologize if you feel that your RFA experience went from positive to negative over time. This decline is certainly not part of our mission, nor is it a typical experience within our company. We pride ourselves in having the ability to provide an engineering experience where employees can develop some of the coolest products for some of the worlds biggest and best companies, all the while working for a small company with small company culture. Our internal team structure helps support new employees get up to speed by providing client specific training and mentorship within the group. The quicker we can get an employee up to speed, the sooner they feel a part of the team and are rewarded with success. While it is true that we have been growing recently, and there have been changes when it comes to infrastructure, training, and our client base, one thing has remained consistent: accessibility. All partners within the company are active in the day to day business, and all have an open-door policy when it comes to suggestions or comments from any and all employees. Since we are a small company, employee input carries a lot of weight with management decisions. Many of the latest system upgrades, and policy changes are a direct result of employee suggestions that were communicated to the management team. I would agree turnover can be challenging and frustrating however, when it does happen, generally it provides opportunities for others to move up within the company. Each person we employ is hand-picked from a much larger group and we consider them a part of the RFA family. It hurts when someone leaves, but ultimately, we want what’s best for the employee and their career. Regarding financials, it would be irresponsible to run a company and not consider financials with all decisions we make. In the end, if the decisions we make run the company out of business that isn’t good for anyone. We are acutely aware of the fact that over 400 employees rely on us everyday to make sound financial decisions. Again, I’m sorry things didn’t work out to your expectations, and I hope your next position gives you what you are looking for in a career!
