Starts fun, ends with a bad taste

Pros

Great work/life balance, laid back environment. Opportunity to work with amazing, intelligent people.

Cons

Middle management is disappointing. They hire friends and allow people who have no right moving into management positions do so. Pressure is put on the front line employees to make up for their managers failures. Lack of career training outside of San Antonio office. Limitations on where you can go in your career if you are not willing to relocate. Pay is below industry norms. Raises don't come unless you are promoted and quarterly bonuses are a joke. If there's not enough money for decent raises or bonuses then stop all the traveling, internal events and stocking of multiple snack closets. I've acquired 15 t-shirts since starting here, I'm sure that money could have gone to better use. Teams are understaffed, there's never enough employees on specific teams to handle the customers needs. Be prepared to work through lunch a lot but hey, they'll buy you pizza so that should make up for it.

Good training job, but not a career

Pros

There are many fun people to work with and many learning opportunities if you're new to the industry. The atmosphere is laid back and great to work in.

Cons

There tend to be limited career paths, and while the talent at Rackspace is good, it tends to fall short in keeping the very best talent. Very talented individuals have left to find greener pastures simply because there isn't the structure at the high end to keep highly skilled IT interested and the "brain drain" is noticeable. Management tends to have difficulty understanding technical subjects and so the praise and rewards tend to be for menial tasks and really solid complex work tends to go unnoticed. There is also a recent push among leadership to put most or all of the skilled IT on-call 24/7 in an environment that already eats into many people's personal lives.

Pros

The highest levels of leadership - Lanham, Lew, Graham - have vision, ethics, and balance caring for Rackers, customers, and investors.

Cons

Some organizational ADD, restructuring too frequently, poorly designed and implemented tools for support workers. You can often be evaluated based on perceptions and feelings rather than true performance.
