Pros

I've met and worked with a ton of fantastic people here over the years. Truly some of the finest folks I've ever met are Rackers. If you're a people person and like to work with your friends, this is a great place. Bear in mind though, that not every team is like this. Teams definitely have their own personality.

Cons

The change from private company to public company has been... well, it's not easy, but that's why people give you money to do it. We've grown past the point in terms of how many Rackers there are to do a lot of the things we used to be able to do. There's a lot of "ahhh times were better when..." from the longer tenured Rackers, and some of it is true - but some of it is just a romantic vision we have of the old small RS.

Pros

great co-workers, some of the smartest in the field great customer relationships exposure to many current and cutting edge technologies many opportunities to move up quickly

Cons

under staffed under paid It is easy to move up within Rackspace, however, there is a negative side effect to moving up quickly as well. Say you come in as an entry level position, really put a strong effort in and do all that is asked. Following this model you will certainly move up through the ranks quickly while learning a ton of good skills. The side effect of this is that Rackspace limits the amount that your pay can grow yearly. The end result is your hardest working, most promising, young rackers doing the job of a high position, however, the pay is not even close to being within the pay bands that Rackspace uses to define what they feel is the fair market rate. If a rackers moves up quickly the pay increases will not match the role/responsibility increases.

Pros

Great culture, especially at the lower ranks. So many places espouse a great corporate culture and the rules they live by, but it's actually true at Rackspace. For a small company there is a big effort to plan well and use accepted models of getting things done, rather than trying to invent the wheel, which I really appreciated. People are the most valuable asset, and I miss working with more folks from there than any other job I've had.

Cons

Quite a lack of professionalism in the lower ranks, although that was changing in the time I was there. If you come from a big company, this will surprise you and take a while to get used to, but the postives on the cutlure side help alleviate that to an extent. Not a great level of technical understanding at senior mgmt levels, so they miss the point in that area sometimes. Although it is primarily a service company the underlying infrastructure has to be sound.
